Many people dream of owning their own business. However, that could mean virtually anything, because there are so many different types of business opportunities available. Whether you want to start your own business, or find a business for sale so that you don’t have to do everything from scratch, you need to consider the range of available opportunities to make sure you choose one that is the best fit for you.
Here are a few examples of businesses you could get into:
- Affiliate businesses selling product for a parent company. Examples include Avon, Mary Kay, and dozens of similar companies. These companies usually require salespeople to buy the merchandise up front, and then resell it for a profit. Long considered an ideal home business for mothers and homemakers, success is generally dependent on how much time and effort a person is willing to put into their business. However, since a lot of selling is involved, and since it’s not a genuinely independent business, this isn’t an ideal opportunity for everyone.
- Franchise businesses. A franchise business is similar to Avon and Mary Kay setups, except that the owner is responsible for much more — leasing space, paying employees, etc. Since it operates under the parent company’s name, the franchise is required to offer the same products, services, and prices at all the other stores. The parent company also gets a cut, but since the franchise attracts customers with familiararity and consistency, franchises can be highly profitable. Examples of these kinds of arrangements include Subway and Ship on Site.
- Business startup. If you want your own independent business, you can take the plunge and start a business from scratch. This is more satisfying for many people, but it also carries a higher risk factor than opening a franchise. However, if you know what you are doing, write a good business plan, and get financing as needing, your chances of success are much better than those who venture into these waters unprepared.
Not every small business offers complete financial freedom — in some ways, you are more of a slave to your company when you are its owner than when you are just an employee. Even so, the experience and investment of owning one’s business is well worth the extra work for many people. As long as you pick a business that is a good match for you, you are sure to love owning your own business!

Many of the items that you are going to need to get for an office are items that are also purchased by students and teachers for use in schools. In some cases, it’s a good idea to purchase your office supplies from a school supply store. In other cases, it’s not the best idea to get your office supplies from these types of places.
If you are purchasing basic office supplies then it is a good idea to get them from a school supply store (especially a discount school supply store) because you can save a lot of money on the purchases when shopping at these stores instead of at office supply stores. Basic supplies like paper, pens, staplers, scissors, etc. are going to cost more at the office supply store even though they are the same products that can be purchased at a school supply store.
However, when you are shopping for more advanced supplies, such as computer gadgets, you may want to think twice about using the school supply store. The reason for this is that the school supply store will likely only have a limited number of choices for any of these types of products that you might seek to purchase. The office store will give you more variety so you’ll be more likely to end up with the product that you truly want.

If your business involves the handling of clients’ sensitive personal and/or financial information, then a high security shredder is definitely for you. Unlike many basic personal paper shredders, which shred documents into long strips, a high security machine cross-cuts paper into small confetti-like pieces. It makes them virtually impossible to piece together. Like most types of thieves, the average would-be identity thief will most likely move on to an easier target. Fellowes, Destroyit and Dahle paper shredders are just a few of the many product lines from which you can choose. You will surely find a product that perfectly matches your unique needs and applications.
In some cases, commercial paper shredders are the wisest choice. If you’re shredding a large number of documents at one time, a commercial unit is probably the best fit. With more powerful motors and significantly higher capacities, commercial shredders are a great option for larger offices. Unlike smaller, personal devices, these machines will not slow you down with low capacity or motors that quickly overheat. Some will even allow you to load a stack of paper and walk away – automatic feeders eliminate the need for you to stand around and wait! In the end, you will not only be protecting your client’s information. You will also be saving valuable time.
