3 Careers Requiring Culinary Training

Culinary careers can be very rewarding.  However, many of the best jobs require culinary training.  Here are three sought-after culinary jobs that you’ll need the proper training to break into.

  • Lead chef – You usually don’t need a culinary arts degree in order to get a job working as a fast food cook, short order cook, or any other job requiring only basic cooking skills.  However, a lead chef position often requires more than basic knowledge about food — the kind of knowledge that comes from a good education.
  • Menu planner – If you are planning the meals for a restaurant, or perhaps even a school or a retirement home, you will need a culinary education.  This is because planning a menu requires not only an understanding of how flavors go together, but also of how to create a nutritious meal.  Most culinary cooking schools include nutrition classes in their degree requirements, ensuring that you understand basic nutrition well enough to plan a well-rounded meal.
  • Caterer – While it might seem that as your own boss, you don’t have to require anything of yourself, the truth is that as an independent caterer your clients play the roll of your boss.  After all, they have the power to hire and fire you.  If they don’t like your cooking, or don’t believe that you have enough qualifications to cater their fancy parties, they simply won’t hire you.  As a self-employed person, the success of your business depends on your clients, so make sure that you have the qualifications you need before going into business for yourself.

When the future of your career is at stake, don’t settle for anything less than the best.  If your dream job requires a culinary arts degree, then make sure you get the training you need to succeed in your field.
